The RESONATE Approach: How We Take Your Project From Brief to Build

Every structural project starts the same way: someone has a plan, a worry or a question, and they need an engineer who will take it seriously. Over the years we have shaped how we answer that call into a simple framework we call RESONATE. It is the way we work on every job, whether it is a single steel beam for a kitchen knock-through in Peterborough or a full structural package for a new build in London.
RESONATE stands for eight things we hold ourselves to. Here is what each one means in practice, and what it means for you.
R – Requirements understanding
Before we calculate anything, we listen. What are you trying to achieve, what is your budget, what has your architect or builder already told you, and what are you worried about? A clear brief at the start saves redesigns, delays and cost later. If you are not sure what you need yet, that is fine. Working it out together is part of the job.
E – Engineering excellence
Our designs and calculations are thorough, checked and built on sound engineering principles. We aim for drawings and calculation packages your builder can work from directly and that Building Control can approve without back-and-forth. Getting it right first time is the standard we set ourselves.
S – Sustainable solutions
Good engineering uses the right amount of material in the right place. Where we can, we retain and strengthen existing structure rather than replace it, specify materials sensibly and avoid over-design. That is better for the environment and usually better for your budget too.
O – Optimal design
There is rarely only one way to solve a structural problem. We look at the options and recommend the one that balances safety, buildability, cost and programme for your particular project. A design that looks elegant on paper but is difficult to install on site is not an optimal design.
N – Navigating regulations
Building Regulations, Building Control submissions and Party Wall matters can feel like a maze. We provide the structural calculations and drawings needed for approval, and we work alongside party wall surveyors when your works affect a neighbouring property. You get clear guidance on what is required and why.
A – Architectural harmony
Structure should support the design, not fight it. We work closely with architects and designers so that beams, columns and connections fit the vision for the space, whether that is a wide open-plan kitchen, a loft conversion with generous headroom or a sensitive alteration to an older building.
T – Timely delivery
We know a structural engineer can hold up a whole project. We agree realistic timescales at the start, keep you updated and turn work around quickly so your builder, architect and Building Control can keep moving.
E – Exceptional service
Clear communication in plain English, engineers who pick up the phone and advice you can act on. From the first enquiry to the final drawing, we want you to feel informed and confident about your project.
What RESONATE means for you
- Homeowners get honest, practical advice on extensions, loft conversions, wall removals and structural concerns such as cracking or movement.
- Architects get an engineering partner who respects the design intent and responds quickly.
- Builders and contractors get clear, buildable drawings and support when questions come up on site.
- Developers get feasibility advice, value engineering and reliable delivery across multiple projects.
You can see how RESONATE applies across our six core services, from structural design and calculations to surveys, party wall engineering and temporary works, on our services page.
Start your project the RESONATE way
Tell us what you are planning, what you have noticed or what you are concerned about. You do not need to know the name of the service you need. We will help you work out the right next step. Send us an enquiry or call our Peterborough office on 01733 602 844 or our London office on 020 8191 2284.
Have a question about your own project?
Send us a drawing or a photo and an engineer will tell you what is possible.
