Every alteration has a moment when part of the building is missing and the load still has to go somewhere. Temporary works are what hold it up in that moment: props and needles under a wall while a beam goes in, a frame holding a facade while the building behind it is rebuilt, support to an excavation beside a neighbour’s foundation.
They are designed as carefully as the permanent structure, because they are carrying the same loads.
