Whether you’re planning a new build, renovation, or need an expert assessment, choosing the right structural engineer is critical—not just for the success of your project but for the safety and longevity of the structure itself.

  1. What Do Structural Engineers Do?

A structural engineer is a qualified professional who designs, analyses, and ensures the safety and stability of buildings and other structures. While architects focus on form and aesthetics, structural engineers ensure the building can actually stand up—handling load-bearing calculations, material analysis, and compliance with building regulations.

Whether you’re building a new house, extending a property, or converting a loft, a structural engineer is crucial to making the vision a reality, safely and sustainably.

  1. Key Services Offered by Structural Engineering Firms

A reputable firm like Ora Labora will offer a wide range of structural engineering services, including:

  • Structural Design and Analysis: Calculating loads, stresses, and material tolerances for new builds and refurbishments.
  • Retrospective Calculations: For buildings needing proof of structure post-build.
  • Structural Surveys and Reports: Essential for mortgage purposes, insurance, or to assess potential faults.
  • Steel Beam Calculations: Often required for knock-throughs or open-plan conversions.
  • Foundation and Groundworks Analysis: Especially important in areas with clay soil or flood risks.
  • Temporary Works Design: For construction phases that require interim structural support.
  • Retaining Wall Design: Common in sloped or complex landscaping projects.
  • Load-Bearing Wall Assessments: Vital when planning to remove internal walls.
  • Basement Conversions: Involving tanking, underpinning, and ground load analysis.
  • Structural Reinforcement: For listed buildings or those with ageing infrastructure.

  1. Qualities to Look for in a Structural Engineer Near Me

When searching for structural engineers near me, you want more than just qualifications. Here are key indicators of a good firm:

  • Chartered Status (MIStructE or CEng): This ensures they are professionally qualified and regulated.
  • Clear Communication: Structural work involves lots of technical data. You want someone who can explain things clearly.
  • Detailed, Legally Compliant Reports: That satisfy building control and third parties like insurers and mortgage lenders.
  • Experience with Similar Projects: Whether residential, commercial, or heritage-listed.
  • Strong Client Reviews and Case Studies: Check for testimonials, especially from clients in Cambridge, Boston, or King’s Lynn.
  • Insurance and Guarantees: Professional indemnity insurance is non-negotiable.

  1. Regional Expertise: Why Local Knowledge Matter

In areas like Huntingdon, Peterborough, and King’s Lynn, local geology and building regulations play a crucial role in structural design. For instance:

  • Cambridge: Full of historic and listed buildings needing sympathetic structural work.
  • Boston: Located in an area with potential flood risks—special attention to foundations and water ingress.
  • Huntingdon & Peterborough: Many modern developments on variable ground conditions, requiring expert foundation advice.
  • King’s Lynn: A mix of rural and urban challenges, often involving conservation considerations.

Using a company like Ora Labora, which has deep roots in the East of England, gives you the added advantage of engineers who know the lay of the land, the local planning authorities, and the materials that work best in the regional climate and soil types.

Stella did a great job for us. She liaised with building control (quite a challenge) and thought of things we would have never considered. Overall she did a great job for us and we are extremely happy with the outcome.

We used Ora Labora to get structural drawings for the removal of 5 load bearing walls. I had contacted many other structural engineer firms but they were hesitant to take on the project. When I rang Ora Labora there were no issues and they were able to come out quickly to survey the property. Everyone was very professional and I was able to get the final drawings very quickly at a good price. I handed these over to my builder and they were able to complete the work without any issues. I would highly recommend and would use them again!

We were referred to Ora Labora and it was a great referral. Stella came around and checked the property and had given us enough notice of where we needed to excavate for her to get a better understanding of the existing building. Drawings were submitted for our approval before final drawings completed. All done in great time, to me. Thank you Ivy for all your effort and communication as well. Well deserved 5 plus stars.

Highly recommended structural engineer. I was introduced by a friend to a very good and efficient structural engineer, Stella Macharia. She analysed the project and supported me during the process of new build on the 3rd floor. Stella attended at the site time stated and identified the issue straight away, and was very knowledgeable. I would highly recommend Ora Labora and her team and wish to continue to work with them for any future projects.
